Becoming a volunteer is a rewarding experience that will change your life in order to know the Ecuadorian culture, get in touch with social problems, contrasts and gives you the opportunity to help other people with less opportunities in life. The school is proud to introduce you to Ecuador´s volunteer opportunities. We offer programs of volunteer work abroad in social ,health and community areas.

The school arranges for you a complete program of volunteer work in the following organizations:

FUNDACION ABUELITOS DE LA CALLE (QUITO)

This Foundation gives every day attention and care to a group of elderly people that lives in extreme poverty; some of them have been left from their families, they don´t work or have social security .The foundation gives the opportunity to volunteers from Ecuador or other countries to help this people in the following programs:

Internships: You can make an internship in the following areas: social work, research, nursing, medicine, geriatric facilities , physiotherapy, and psychology. The Foundation has and especial area for medical care and physiotherapy for the elderly people including all the machines, technology and supplies to assist the patients. The Foundation hires students of medicine, nursing and also students that are interested in assisting in the administrative areas filling out charts, handing out medicines, supplies, , and helping with the daily routine .Volunteers are kept very busy and are greatly valued! The intern will present at the end of the internship a summary of their job including all the skills they have developed , this paper will be evaluated in order to obtain a certificate.

Volunteer work: The Foundation is divided in different areas to keep elderly people active and busy the whole morning. The workshops are: bakery, literacy, chorus, dancing, painting, and theater, areas which volunteers are encouraged to help with. Human interaction is important as some of the elderly people sometimes feel isolated.

Volunteers activities:

- Help in preparing the menus for the elderly people.
- Caring for the elderly people and offering them companionship.
- Becoming part of a workshop and sharing the activities with the elderly people.
- Organizing cultural and family activities and events.

Duration

The Elderly Care program requires volunteers to work a minimum of 3 hours per day .Elderly people come to the Foundation Monday-Friday 8:30am-13:30pm.

• Interns and volunteers can have lunch daily for free will the elderly people and will obtain at the end of their work a certificate from the Foundation.

FUNDACION JUAN JOSE MARTINEZ ( QUITO-GUAYAQUIL-CUENCA)

This organization was founded four years ago and has created the program “Aulas hospitalarias” (classrooms at hospitals) supported by the Education Ministery. This program helps kids that suffer any kind of cancer and provide them teachers to continue the school studies during the long and painful treatment at the hospital. This is an excellent support for these kids because they have a motivation to continue their lifes. Teachers and volunteers also participate in everyday activities for the kids to play together ,share with other kids, paint, sing and any kind of activities that help them to feel they are no isolated from society.

Terracentro is searching for volunteers that can become part of this program as English teachers and are also able to give their everyday love and care to this kids. The Foundation program operates in Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca and has their group of volunteers working at Solca Hospital for kids with cancer and Hospital Vaca Ortiz for kids with other medical sickness. The idea is lovely, to give hope and joy to this kids that are strong and believe in life.

If you are interested to become part of this group let us know how many hours per day you want to work as a volunteer (we need at least 3 hours per day) to contact immediately the Foundation. Terracentro will give you English books and a Lesson program to teach the kids. The Foundation is looking for teachers that could join the teacher´s team for next school year starting on September 2010 volunteers need to be confirmed until the end of August.

Volunteers will also obtain a certificate of participation from the Foundation.
