One of the destinations of our Travelling Classroom is Machachi (Hosteria Papagayo). Here we like to present some information about that city:
Whenever a tourist come to Ecuador he know most of the important sites to visit like the Galapagos Islands, the volcano Cotopaxi, the cities of Cuenca and Baños and of course Quito. But very few tourists discover the other hidden getaways of Ecuador which are located only a short distance from the capital in the province of Pichincha.
Sofia, the owner of the Terracentro Spanish School in Quito, Ecuador was in Machachi and just returned to Quito. Machachi is just 35km southeast of Quito, located in the canton of Mejía in the province of Pichincha. Machachi is a small but attractive city. Within the city you will find many farms (“haciendas”), most of them producing milk, cheese and yoghurts and some for planting roses.
Video about Machachi
From Machachi you have an easy access to Cotopaxi and Quilotoa. In the city there a lot of farms to stay overnight. Things to do are for example the visit of the rose plantations. In Machachi are the largest rose plantations of Ecuador. It is a wonderful journey to visit that farms and see production, harvesting and washing of the roses. As you can see and hear there is always music playing in the greenhouses. The roses need that music to grow.
One way to see the surroundings of Machachi is on horseback. You can rend a horse on many of the farms around the town. When riding you can enjoy the beautiful scenery like the mountains of the Ecuadorian highlands.
In town make sure that you visit the central park with the cathedral. You can also visit the market. In the city there are many people making local handicrafts.
Close to the city are cheese factories that you can visit if you are interested in that. Also you might visit the mineral springs near to the city where mineral water is produced.
In the month of July there a lot of festivals in the city. It is worth visiting them. Many people from all over the country come to these festivals and enjoy the food
We recommend visit Machachi to learn the traditions and culture of the Ecuadorian highlands.
